How Should I Prepare for Liposuction Surgery?

Planning for liposuction

Starting Your Liposuction Journey

Are you fed up with trying every diet and exercise regime only to find that they don’t offer you the results you want?

Do you want to eliminate fat from your hips, thighs, arms, or other areas of your body? Liposuction could be the procedure for you.

A procedure that’s performed at Pittman Plastic Surgery within our AAAHC-accredited center, it targets fat cells to improve your overall body shape and give you a boost in confidence.

About Liposuction

If you’re considering liposuction surgery, it’s important to know the ins and outs of it beforehand. Although during your initial consultation, the procedure will be discussed with you, along with the risks associated with it, here is a brief insight into what you can expect.

Liposuction is designed to change and enhance the contour of a patient’s body, it eliminates stubborn pockets of subcutaneous fat by removing it. The fat is broken up and removed using a cannula and the tumescent technique, and typically takes up to 2 hours.

Although individual results may vary, you’ll typically see a difference in appearance within 4-6 months. Smoothing the skin and giving it a sleeker appearance, the surgery is carried out under general anesthesia.

Liposuction Preparation Tips

Before heading into your liposuction surgery, there are certain steps that you should take to ensure that you’re as prepared as possible for it. During your consultation, you may be asked to:

  • Stop smoking.
  • Stop taking certain medications – such as painkillers or herbal supplements several weeks prior (as they can increase bleeding during surgery).
  • Get a medical evaluation.
  • Adjust your diet or alcohol intake.

Each individual’s preparation will be unique to them. So it’s important to enquire with your surgeon about what you can do to ensure you’re as prepared as possible prior to your surgery.

Am I a Candidate for Liposuction?

Despite liposuction being an effective way of removing undesirable amounts of fat around the body, there are certain factors that influence your eligibility for the procedure.

Firstly, you must have realistic expectations when you go into the surgery and know that it won’t get rid of cellulite or be used as a way of treating obesity.

However, if you’re a healthy individual who doesn’t smoke, has a good skin tone, and is within 30% of your ideal weight, it could be the best solution for you. Alongside this, it’s most effective with those who have localized fatty deposits.

To retain your ideal shape and contour, after the procedure, it’s advised that you continue on a healthy diet and exercise as soon as it’s recommended that you’re able to (usually within 4 weeks post-surgery).

“Love my liposuction. Dr. Lugo did a great job. Now my clothes fit better and I’m not self-conscious about specific areas. She truly cares for her patients and is very professional. I highly recommend her.”
