Laser Skin Resurfacing
What is Laser Skin Resurfacing?
Who wouldn’t love healthier, younger-looking, glowing skin? Laser skin resurfacing can undo years of sun damage as well as improve scars, wrinkles, and fine lines.
Laser skin rejuvenation is a cosmetic procedure that uses energy to rejuvenate the skin. It is also called laser skin resurfacing, laser peel, laser abrasion, and laser vaporization.
There are several ways to resurface the skin (see the next paragraph). The laser technique utilizes concentrated pulses of energy to remove old skin cells. Laser skin resurfacing is unique because it allows the skin to be treated layer by layer with great precision.
Laser treatment of the skin can help reduce fine lines and wrinkles as well as other blemishes like acne scars. The new skin cells that form after laser resurfacing give the skin a fresher, younger-looking, tighter appearance.
Types of Skin Resurfacing
Various types of skin resurfacing procedures are available, including:
- Mechanical techniques (Microneedling)
- Light treatments (BBL)
- Thermal techniques (Laser Skin Resurfacing)
What Does Laser Skin Resurfacing Do?
Laser skin resurfacing is an effective cosmetic procedure for improving sun-damaged and aging skin. The laser device delivers an intense beam of energy that produces heat, which destroys the outer layer of the skin. The controlled injury to the skin stimulates the body to start repairing itself. This causes a cascade of things to happen that include stimulating the skin to produce more collagen, resulting in a reduction in fine lines and wrinkles.
The new skin that forms after a laser procedure is tighter and smoother with a more even skin tone. Laser skin resurfacing is used to treat age spots, liver spots, sun spots, acne scars, fine lines, and moderate wrinkles.
Things to Consider When Evaluating Laser Skin Resurfacing
Laser skin resurfacing is a large umbrella that encompasses a variety of different types of energy (laser) devices. However, there are tons of old devices with ancient technology in the market today.
At Pittman Plastic Surgery, we have invested in the MOXI laser platform by Sciton. Sciton is one of the leading companies in the laser industry. All of their parts are manufactured in the United States, and we feel that this investment matches our commitment to bringing our patients the best and safest procedures possible.
Preparing for Laser Skin Resurfacing
Before you undergo laser resurfacing, our medical providers will conduct a thorough evaluation, including a history of past and current health problems, medications, and drug allergies. Our medical team will then examine your skin to determine if you are a good candidate for laser skin resurfacing.
Before the procedure, you may be asked to take a preventative medication for herpes virus infection, which causes cold sores. You’ll also be advised to minimize sun exposure before and after your laser skin treatment. Adherence to this recommendation is important because too much sun can lead to an irregular skin tone.
Laser Skin Resurfacing FAQ's
Laser skin resurfacing is generally safe. However, it’s important to choose a medical practice with experience in aesthetic procedures. In inexperienced hands, laser devices can be harmful and may lead to complications like infections, burns, or abnormal healing. At Pittman Plastic Surgery, we are the leading medical aesthetic practice in the area and have years of experience delivering medical-grade treatments to 1000’s of patients around Athens.
You will begin to see some improvements in your skin soon after your laser skin resurfacing, and you will continue to see improvements for up to a year. The effects of laser skin rejuvenation can last for several years. However, the procedure does not stop the aging process. Therefore, over time, fine lines and wrinkles will reappear as you grow older. You can repeat the laser resurfacing procedure if necessary.
Our MOXI laser by Sciton laser skin resurfacing platform is suitable for most skin types, with a few exceptions. People who are prone to scarring may not be recommended laser skin treatments due to the risk of damaging the skin. Also, those with cold sores or acne may not be good candidates for this procedure as these conditions can sometimes worsen after laser rejuvenation. Last but not least, smokers are at risk of poor healing after laser procedures. If you smoke, we may ask you to quit for at least 2 weeks before and after the planned laser skin resurfacing.
