What is Breast Reduction Surgery?
Breast reduction surgery, also known as reduction mammoplasty, involves removing excess skin and tissue to decrease breast size and achieve a more proportionate bust. This procedure is ideal for those seeking aesthetic improvements or relief from physical discomfort caused by large, heavy breasts. By lessening breast volume and weight, the surgery can help alleviate issues like back and neck pain, skin irritation, and poor posture while boosting self-esteem and comfort.
How Does Breast Reduction Work?
Breast reduction surgery works by reducing and reshaping the breasts. Usually done under general anesthesia, the procedure begins with surgical incisions. The surgeon then carefully sculpts the breast tissue, repositioning the nipple and areola to ensure a balanced appearance. Fat removal via liposuction may be used to achieve the desired size. After reshaping the breast, the incisions are closed with sutures to aid healing, resulting in a smaller and firmer breast contour.
Benefits of a Breast Reduction Treatment
Breast reduction surgery provides significant relief from physical discomfort, such as neck, back, and shoulder pain, while also alleviating pressure from bra straps and reducing skin chafing. It helps improve posture, increases energy levels, and creates a balanced upper-body silhouette. This procedure ensures that clothing, including sportswear and swimwear, fits more comfortably, making physical activities more enjoyable and boosting self-confidence. The natural-looking results aim for aesthetic enhancement and a better quality of life.
Can I Combine Breast Reduction Surgery with Other Procedures?
Our surgeons often perform combination procedures involving breast reduction, tummy tucks, and liposuction. You can combine several procedures with breast reduction to achieve enhanced results.
Liposuction is a procedure aimed at altering and improving the body’s contour by removing stubborn pockets of fat. Using a cannula and the tumescent technique, the fat is broken down and removed.
A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, is designed to slim and sculpt the abdominal region. This surgery effectively removes excess fat and skin while tightening muscles in the stomach that may have become stretched or weakened.
These options can help you achieve more comprehensive body contouring alongside breast reduction surgery.
Candidates for A Breast Reduction
Breast reduction surgery is ideal for women and men who either have troublesome health issues or lack self-confidence due to very large, heavy breasts. There are many medical issues attributable to large breasts, including:
-Neck & back pain associated with breast weight
-Skin irritation or chafing
-Bra strap sores or indentations
-Poor, slouching posture
-Difficulty performing routine activities, such as exercise
Breast Reduction PROCEDURE
Our Surgeons will remove excess glandular tissue, skin, and fat from your breasts for a smaller, lighter, and firmer result. The areola size may also be reduced and repositioned centrally on the breast mound.
After your procedure, you may experience relief from health problems caused by large breasts, while experiencing a boost in your confidence and comfort with your body.
Breast Reduction is an outpatient procedure performed at our private, fully-accredited AAAHC Surgical Facility, offering each patient comfort and convenience, while also saving them time and costs associated with hospital-based surgeries. The surgery will be performed under general anesthesia and typically takes our surgeons two to three hours to complete.
Recovery & Results
For several weeks after surgery, we will require you to wear a sports bra and limit any strenuous upper-body activity. You will be able to go back to work after 2 weeks but will need to wait 2-3 weeks before any physical contact with the breasts. Your scars will fade over the course of several months to a year. Before, during, and after
What To Expect Before a Breast Reduction Surgery
During your consultation, Dr. Pittman will take the time to understand your medical history and personal background by asking detailed questions. He will also explain each procedure and outline the recovery process. You can also share your cosmetic goals and expectations.
What To Expect During a Breast Reduction Surgery
Medications, such as intravenous sedation or general anesthesia, are given for comfort during surgery. The procedure involves making incisions, like the lollipop or keyhole incision. Afterward, the nipple is repositioned while staying connected to its original blood and nerve supply, and the areola may be reduced. Excess breast tissue is removed, and the remaining tissue is lifted and shaped. The nipple and areola may be removed and repositioned for large breasts, potentially resulting in a loss of sensation. Finally, the incisions are closed with sutures, skin adhesives, or surgical tape, which will fade over time.
What To Expect After a Breast Reduction Surgery
After breast reduction surgery, you will leave the hospital with a surgical bra, bandages, and drains to help with healing and reduce swelling. Your surgeon will provide instructions to take care of your incisions, including keeping them dry first; typically, you can start showering after 1-2 days. Some swelling is normal in the first few weeks and will gradually decrease, revealing the surgery’s results. The surgical scars will also fade over several months. Remember to attend all follow-up appointments to ensure your recovery progresses smoothly.
Frequently Asked Questions
Generally speaking we want you as close to your ideal weight as possible for any surgery. However, if you plan on losing a significant amount of weight then we suggest discussing this with your plastic surgeon.
You will want to wait until your breast have fully developed before considering any breast surgery, including breast reduction. After your breasts have fully developed then you can consider breast surgery options.
Once the swelling has gone away completely and you have been cleared by your surgeon.
Breast reduction surgery usually takes two to three hours to complete.
The cost of breast reduction surgery varies based on the extent of the procedure, but it has become more affordable recently.
After breast reduction surgery, you can typically return to work within 2 weeks. However, it is important to avoid any physical contact with your breasts for at least 2 to 3 weeks post-surgery.
It is possible to breastfeed after a breast reduction. However, there are some risks and important factors to consider. Breast reduction surgery might lead to reduced milk production and decreased nipple sensitivity; the milk duct system must be kept intact to preserve the ability to breastfeed. Incisions made under the breast fold extending to the armpit are less likely to cause breastfeeding issues.
Breast reduction surgery permanently reduces the size of your breasts by removing fat and other breast tissue, which does not grow back. However, gaining weight after the procedure can cause new fat to accumulate in your breasts, potentially increasing their size.
FROM OUR PATIENTS
“I did not realize how uncomfortable my breasts were till I received new ones. I can sleep better. I feel like they are truly mine.”
“Before my breast reduction/lift surgery, I experienced constant pain including nerve pain in both upper arms, shoulder pain with extremely deep grooves, back pain, headaches.
I also found it very hard to find clothing that fit due to the huge size of my breasts. After my surgery, though I felt the pain of incisions and the effects of being put the sleep and painkillers,
I had no pain in my arms, shoulders, or back. I also had upper and lower eyelid surgery during this procedure. Before surgery,
I had a limited field of vision and had a constant dermatitis and many eye infections due to any makeup I tried to wear being pushed into my eyes by my drooping eyelids. I also experienced embarrassment due to my “tired” look.
After surgery there was an immediate improvement in vision and once everything cleared up, in my looks and self-esteem.”
“I am posting publicly because I am so happy and proud of the new me. March 17 was my final visit with Dr. Pittman.
It has been 4 months since my breast reduction and I couldn’t have asked for a better experience, or better results.
The staff is so caring, great personalities, very informative. Everything Dr. Pittman told me to expect was exact. If you’re looking for an expert,
and a team to help you all the way, please consider Dr. Pittman. I even called his cell phone on a Sunday and he called me right back a few minutes later and talked to me.
I chose him based on reviews, so I’m making sure to leave one also. I don’t live near Athens, so take it from me, don’t settle based on location. It’s a lifetime decision and I wanted to make the right one.”
