Eyelid Surgery: Is It Right for you?

Why Choose Eyelid Surgery?

With everyday interactions with colleagues, family members, and even strangers, the eyes can be an important aspect of overall appearance as they are typically the first thing that someone notices about you. As we get older, the tone and shape of our eyelids experience progressively noticeable changes that make us appear more tired or older than we really are. At Pittman Plastic Surgery, Athens plastic surgeons Dr. Ed Pittman and Dr. Chelsea Venditto offer eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) for patients seeking to correct the natural aging process or want to restore their faces to a more vibrant look

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, eyelid surgery is ranked in the top five most popular cosmetic surgery procedures, with over 204,000 procedures performed in 2012, a 4% increase from 2011. As the eyelids stretch and muscles weaken, excess fat and skin accumulate above and below the eyelids causing loose, drooping lids, under-eye bags and puffy or lax skin. Eyelid surgery can be performed on the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, and/or both and can complement other cosmetic procedures to create a more rejuvenated appearance.

How is Eyelid Surgery Performed?

Performed under sedation or general anesthesia, small incision lines are made within the natural folds of the eyelids to conceal scars. For upper eyelid surgery, a small incision is made in the crease of the eyelid to remove loose or sagging skin that can alter the upper eyelid’s natural contours, impairing vision. Puffiness in the eyelid is addressed as excess fat deposits are repositioned or removed, and muscles are tightened within the tissue allowing our board-certified plastic surgeons to create a more alert and natural look for their patients. Similarly, lower eyelid surgery rejuvenates by removing under-eye bags that contribute to a tired appearance. Our surgeons make a small incision on the lower lash line to lift and tighten the orbicularis muscle, a muscle in the face that causes the eye to blink or close, and correct bags by removing or redistributing excess fat and skin. As no one technique is right for everyone, Dr. Pittman and Dr. Venditto discuss your goals and recommend which technique will best suit your needs.

Upper and lower eyelid surgery can be safely performed simultaneously and although it can’t correct sagging eyebrows, dark circles, or fine lines and wrinkles, some patients elect to undergo a brow lift or facelift surgery at the same time to restore an overall youthful appearance. Recovery time varies for each individual and depends on whether multiple procedures are performed. Eyelid surgery results are permanent, yet still susceptible to environmental factors and time that contribute to signs of aging. Results can be seen gradually in the following weeks, once swelling and bruising have subsided.
