Face Facts: A Guide to Cosmetic Facial Surgery

Facial Surgery Options

We all cringe thinking about facial aging. Though the events that caused our repeated facial expressions which in turn created our smile (and frown) lines, furrowed brows, and heavy eyelids were no doubt life-changing, there are lasting effects that we wish weren’t so permanent. Dr. Ed Pittman and Dr. Piotr Skowronsk work one on one with their facial rejuvenation patients to ensure that their individual cosmetic concerns are thoroughly understood before surgery so that the most appropriate care plan can be devised and the most natural plastic surgery results can be achieved.

As we covered in our previous facelift blog, there is a common misconception that a traditional facelift will right all cosmetic wrongs of the aging face; however, with the proper education, patients come to find that there are many more facial plastic surgery options that can more precisely meet their needs.  Below is an introduction to some of the lesser-known facial surgery options:

Forehead lift/ Browlift

Surgical excision of sagging skin on the upper portion of the face (above the eyes) and tightening of the underlying muscle contributing to a permanently angry or furrowed look. By treating both the muscle and skin, the brows are returned to a higher, more youthful location. At Pittman Plastic Surgery, this is done through an open technique to allow for better muscle visibility and produce natural-looking brow rejuvenation results.

Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Lift)

Surgical removal of the excess skin creating the appearance of a hooded upper eyelid (upper blepharoplasty) or excision of the fat pads creating a puffy, permanently tired appearance underneath the eyes (lower blepharoplasty). For many patients, both upper and lower blepharoplasty can be performed simultaneously to address concerns above and below the eyelids.

Rhinoplasty (Nose Surgery)

While not as dramatic as the rejuvenation of a facelift, there have been several studies, including one published in the Archives of Facial Plastic Surgery in January 2012 speculating the self-image boost derived from rhinoplasty can help a patient feel younger. Additionally, this surgical reshaping of the bridge of the nose, nostrils, and/or nasal tip can help patients achieve a balance between their other newly rejuvenated facial features.

Lower facelift

Addressing sagging skin and lax muscle of the lower third of the face, Drs. Pittman and Skowronski use inconspicuous incisions to reduce sagging cheeks and jowls.

Necklift

Addressing the area below the chin specifically, excess skin is removed and underlying platysma muscles are tightened. This procedure is also commonly combined with liposuction of the double chin to reduce isolated fat that can accumulate with age.

Chin Augmentation

The surgical insertion of a solid silicone facial implant to augment the chin and create a more prominent, proportionate jawline for men and women.
